iPhone Has Hidden TV Out Feature
16/05/09 | | |Checking around Apple's iPhone OS 2.2 beta SDK, which was reportedly in beta testing in September end, Ars Technica has reported that the updated MediaPlayer framework allows hidden TV Out feature.
Erica Sadun, the author of iPhone Developers Cookbook, mentioned that the MPTVOutWindow Class allows taking iPhone based video to TV screen and this unpublished class is expected to create live video feed supposed to be exported via iPhone's connector port. This obviously requires users to buy video adapter or cable separately to use this feature. Here's a video that shows demo of the TV Out feature being used where Sadun had used accelerometer as input controller.
The iPhone developers Drunknbass and Greg "go2" Hartstein have made strides in TV Out development projects. Drunknbass had got his game enabled with TV Out using iPhone TV adapter and programming it with public API. However, he reported that the TV Out feature was too CPU/GPU intensive for its game
